CNN 360 Anderson Cooper – Auto Insurance part 1

Smooth, refined and oh-so-comfortable — that pretty well sums up the all-new 2011 Toyota Avalon that appeared in my driveway recently.

There’s nothing particularly exciting about this large sedan, though, but that’s OK. It’s not meant to be. The Avalon is aimed at the over-60 crowd, who, Toyota believes, care more about creature comforts than dazzling performance.

My best description of the Avalon would be that it’s pretty much a Japanese Buick, and considering how good Buicks are these days, that’s a compliment.

Exterior features include a wider grille, projector-beam headlights, restyled bumpers, more chrome, redesigned rocker panels, glare-resistant outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED taillights, and dual exhaust outlets in the lower rear bumper.

The Avalon has a pleasant but not overbearing appearance, and looks more like a Lexus than a vehicle carrying the Toyota name. Toyota says the new exterior styling was designed with younger buyers in mind, however, perhaps even professionals in their mid-30s to upper 40s.

The drivetrain remains the same from last year — a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. EPA ratings are 20 mpg city/29 highway, and the engine is set up to use regular gasoline.

There is plenty of power for merging and passing. but this isn’t a sport sedan, so performance isn’t particularly impressive, nor is the car’s road handling. Steering is a bit on the loose side, not tight and precise like one would expect if this were a sportier vehicle.

Our test vehicle was the base XLS model, which lists for $32,245 (plus $750 freight). there is a fancier version, the Limited, which begins at $35,485, but it’s not necessary to spend that much to have a very nicely equipped Avalon.

The only options on our vehicle were a JBL premium audio system ($900), which has 660 watts and 12 speakers; and carpeted floor and trunk mats ($199), bringing the total price to $34,094 (with freight).

At that price, though, even the base model is pushing into the realm of the luxury brands, so the Avalon isn’t really intended for retired folks on fixed incomes. but neither is a Buick.

Toyota says there was no change in the pricing of the base Avalon from the 2010 model, although lots of new standard equipment was added. The Limited model’s price is up $200.

There are just two models instead of three in the lineup for 2011, and the number of options has been reduced by about 40 percent, as most of the items that previously were optional have been included in the base prices of the XLS or Limited.

Safety is emphasized in the Avalon — as it is in all Toyotas, for that matter — and the car has been listed as a top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an independent testing laboratory partially funded by the auto-insurance industry.

The new Avalon earned “Good” scores in all four of the institute’s safety tests — front, side, rear and rollover — and comes with standard electronic stability control.

This vehicle has a particularly strong roof, as evidenced by the institute’s rollover test, which requires that the roof support the equivalent of four times the vehicle’s weight (the federal standard is just 1.5 times the car’s weight). The test showed the Avalon to have a roof that could hold 4.07 times the car’s weight.

Designed in California and sold only in the U.S. market, the Avalon is produced at Toyota’s plant near Louisville, Ky., which also assembles the midsize Camry sedan and the Venza crossover utility vehicle, which are built on the same chassis.

Besides the Buick LaCrosse and Lucerne, the Avalon competes against sedans such as the Nissan Maxima, Dodge Charger, Honda Accord, Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus, Volvo S80, Chevrolet Impala and even the Lincoln MKS.

Important for the Avalon’s older audience is its comfortable interior, which can accommodate up to five adults and has ample legroom. The front bucket seats and rear bench do a good job of keeping people comfy even on an extended road trip, aided by a smooth-riding suspension.

The rear seat reclines, which Toyota says is an exclusive feature in this vehicle class. Muted colors and wood-grain trim give the cabin an elegant appearance. all seats have thicker stitching, and active front headrests are standard, as well.

Rear headrests have been reshaped and enlarged, and a center armrest can be lowered between the rear-seat passengers when the middle seat is not in use.

In the instrument panel are new Optitron gauges that have graduated white illumination and white pointers, set into smoked lenses surrounded by chrome rings.

There are controls on the steering wheel for the audio and climate-control systems, as well as the driver-information center and Bluetooth connection.

The optional navigation system has easier search and address-input functions, and new displays for points of interest. there is a new on-screen keyboard. a rearview monitor is standard in the rearview mirror or with the navigation system, which was not included on our tester.

Even on the base model, the front seats are leather trimmed. The driver’s side has eight-way power adjust and the passenger side four-way power; both have power lumbar adjustment. The steering wheel and shift knob are leather trimmed, as well.

Standard on our tester were 7-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels with a mirror finish.

Without the audio upgrade, our XLS model would have come with a nine-speaker audio system. The JBL system is standard on the Limited model.

As a stretched version of the Camry, the Avalon has the same front-wheel drive configuration, along with a MacPherson strut front suspension, coil springs, power rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel antilock disc brakes.

Other standard features on our car included dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows/mirrors/door locks with remote, lockable glove box, interior air filter, a sliding front center console/armrest and a USB port for portable audio devices.

Among the standard safety features are seven air bags, including a front knee air bag on the driver’s side, front seat-mounted side air bags and roof-mounted side-curtain air bags for both rows.

The Avalon comes with a full-size spare tire mounted on an alloy wheel, and tire-pressure monitoring is standard.
